A carefully planned tiled floor can completely change how an interior looks and feels. At Abel Tiler, we complete professional floor tiling projects across London, creating practical surfaces that also bring character to the room.
For this project, we transformed the existing floor with light-coloured rectangular tiles arranged in a herringbone pattern. Careful preparation, accurate positioning and consistent spacing produced a brighter and more distinctive finish across the available floor area.
Planning the Patterned Floor Design
The aim of this project was to replace the unfinished floor with a tiled surface that would provide both durability and visual interest. Rather than using a standard straight tile arrangement, a herringbone layout was chosen to give the room a stronger design feature.
This pattern uses rectangular tiles positioned at angles to create a continuous zigzag effect. Its success depends on accurate setting-out because even a small alignment error near the starting point can become increasingly noticeable as the installation progresses.
The light colour of the tiles helps reflect natural light entering through the windows and external door. It also works well with the room’s neutral walls, creating a clean foundation for the rest of the interior.
Achieving an Accurate Herringbone Layout
We started by preparing the floor to create a suitable base for the new installation. Surface preparation is particularly important with a herringbone floor because the tiles must remain level and correctly aligned across the entire area.
Before beginning the main installation, we planned the direction and position of the pattern. This allowed us to consider how the design would run through the room and how the tiles would meet the walls, doorways and fixed features.
We then applied the tile adhesive evenly in manageable sections. Working section by section helped us maintain control over the pattern and position each tile before the adhesive began to set. Every row was checked carefully to keep the herringbone lines balanced and consistent.
Tiles around the edges and more restricted areas required individual measurement and cutting. We shaped these pieces to meet the walls and architectural features neatly while preserving the main pattern. Particular attention was given to avoiding awkward gaps or unnecessary small cuts.
Once all the tiles were securely positioned, we checked the floor for alignment, spacing and level. The joints were then finished to define the herringbone pattern and create a clean, unified surface. Final checks allowed us to confirm that the edges, transitions and wider floor area met our standards.

Trusted for Precise Tiling Work
Patterned floors require patience, accuracy and close attention to detail. Our reviews provide further insight into the workmanship and service customers receive from us.
W STrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Abel was able to respond very quickly to locate the leak through the tiles in our shower. He gave a great explanation on what he needed to do to repair the tiles and stop the leaking. He advised us to purchase some new tiles and he was able to replace and regrout them to stop the leaking. His finished work looks great and very professional! We will definitely contact him to retile our kitchen and bathroom floor. Tru PTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Abel is without a doubt one of the best tilers in the UK. He doesn’t advertise as much on Instagram like some of the more well-known tilers do, but his work is easily as good as, if not better than, most of them. He is simply a great tiler who gets on with the job properly and lets his work speak for itself. Selfishly, I’m glad he doesn’t advertise more, otherwise he would be booked up even further in advance. He really cares about his clients and takes the time to set the tiles out in the best possible way. He always advises on what will work best from his experience and genuinely wants to help achieve the best outcome. His skill level is amazing, and he has all the tools and knowledge needed to do the job properly. The mitres and resin work he did around the edges for us were better than anything we’ve seen from any other tiler before. He treats your home as if it’s his own, protects everything properly, and always cleans up after himself. Aside from the quality of his work, Abel is one of the nicest people you could meet. He’s friendly, honest, reliable, always on time, and clearly takes pride in what he does. He’s a proper family man and a genuinely good person. We’ll definitely be using Abel again for all our tiling work, and we’re also very glad to hear he does outdoor patios as well. Thanks a lot for everything, Abel! Nick PenfoldTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Abel is excellent. Always does a great job and also keen to take on complex problems. As well as general tiling of bathrooms he changed the incline of a step into our shower which sorted out a long standing damp issue. Martin HennessyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I would have no hesitation in recommending Able for any kind of tiling job. Not only did he turn up on time to do the job when he said he would, his workmanship was of a high quality. I was very pleased indeed with all the work done for me & will definitely use Able again in the future. Many thanks. KPTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. A Balanced and Precisely Aligned Finish
The completed floor has given the room a brighter, cleaner and more finished appearance. The light rectangular tiles keep the design versatile, while the herringbone arrangement adds detail and movement without overwhelming the space.
Consistent pattern alignment was central to the quality of this project. The carefully positioned tiles, neat perimeter cuts and evenly finished joints demonstrate the attention we give to both the visible design and the practical performance of the floor.
This transformation represents the standard we aim to deliver on every tiling project: thorough preparation, considered layout planning and precise installation from the first tile to the final check.
